Students can begin applying for FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
With the new year comes a list of things to do, and for high school seniors that includes completing the FAFSA.  The FAFSA determines eligibility for federal and state grants, loans, and work-study opportunities.  In order for students to receive any form of financial aid for college including most scholarships, they must fill out the FAFSA.

All high school seniors should fill out an application.  FAFSA looks at lots of information so while students may think that they don't qualify for any grants, they actually might.  Students can fill out an application any time, though the deadline for the Oklahoma Tuition Aid is March 1.  New national changes have taken effect concerning the date that the Free Application for Federal Student Aid opens.  The FAFSA now opens Oct 1 and uses the parent/guardian's prior year tax information.  For example, this year, students and their families will complete their 2017-2018  FAFSA beginning Oct 1, 2016, using 2015 tax information.. It is recommended to fill it out as soon as possible after Oct 1 because some programs are on a first-come, first-serve basis.  The application takes about 20-30 minutes to complete.   You do not need to wait until you have filed your income taxes.  Tax information can be updated later.

The FAFSA can be accessed by going to fafsa.ed.gov.  There are lots of websites that claim to be the correct website for FAFSA, but they are not. The application is completely free, so if you are on a website that asks for a credit card, you're on the wrong website.
