MS Cell Phone Policy

Attention Wyandotte guardians, parents, and students:

Wyandotte middle school will have a change in their cell phone policy, you can view the policy in its entirety below. It will be implemented starting the 2022-2023 school year.

Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s) of Middle School:

Cell phones and smartwatches have become a way of life, a technological convenience that has impacted all our lives in one way or another. However, in the school environment, cell phones and smartwatches have become a distraction, interruption, and method of illegal exchange of information. Issues include the following:

  • The ringing or buzzing of a student's cell phone, the reading or sending text messages, and checking or posting to social media during class.

  • Students taking videos and pictures of other students in the bathroom and posting on social media.

  • Students make audio recordings of test reviews and listen to them while taking a test or using study notes available on a smartphone while testing.

  • Students using phones while in locker rooms.

  • Other students' pictures are taken in the classroom without permission and posted to social media.

  • Students make videos and post them on Tik-Tok, Snapchat,  Instagram, or Facebook.

  • A large percentage of the conflicts resulting in discipline referrals or bullying referrals begin on social media or text messages.

These activities take away the valuable time needed for instruction and, most importantly, student learning. We recognize that cell phones can be a safety/security tool; however, they can be detrimental in a building emergency, and our protocol to manage such emergencies safely and effectively. Parents are urged to utilize the school phone to relay any messages that may be urgent to their child.

Starting in August of 2022, no student will be allowed to possess or use a cell phone or smartwatch during the hours of 7:40 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. If a student has a cell phone or smartwatch at school, they must be off and secured in a student backpack or bag, or they can be left at home.

If a student is found to be using a cell phone or smartwatch, the phone or smartwatch will be confiscated and placed in a labeled envelope, and delivered to the office. The consequences will be as follows:

1st offense:

  • The student's cell phone or smartwatch will be held in the office until the end of the day.

  • The student will sign for the cell phone or smartwatch at the end of the day in the office.

  • The student will be assigned detention.

2nd offense

  • Parents or guardians will be contacted.

  • A parent or legal guardian will need to pick up and sign for the cell phone after a meeting with the student and principal.

  • The student will be assigned a (1) in-school suspension (ISS).

3rd offense

  • Parents or guardians will be contacted.

  • A parent or legal guardian will need to pick up and sign for the cell phone after a meeting with the student and principal.

  • The student will be assigned an OSS (1) out-of-school suspension.

  Additional offenses will be….

A student that refuses to comply with a request to surrender their cell phone or smartwatch by any member of the faculty or staff and/or administrator will be considered insubordinate. Rules governing insubordination will apply as outlined in the student handbook.

This policy will be included in the 2022-2023 Wyandotte Student Handbook.

Our goal is to create a safe environment conducive to learning and free of all distractions that hinder the learning process.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Elementary or Middle School office at 918-678-2222 ext. 229. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support.
